The Hit and Miss engine the EVAPA owns and runs the grist mill is a Galloway engine manufactured by the William Galloway Company in 1910 in Waterloo, Iowa.
Some of the sales slogans used in 1910 were the following:
- Let the Galloway do the work
- Sell your poorest horse and buy a 5 horsepower Galloway engine for $119.95
- No experience necessary to run the Galloway
- A 5-year guarantee to work for you 365 days a year
- Use the Galloway for 30 to 90 days and see how the engine will save you money and time
- The Only Way is The Galloway!
The Hit and Miss engines became very popular before electricity and tractors was available on the farms. The engines were used for wood saws, grist mills, pumped water, grain grinders, concrete mixers and whatever tools needed to be run by a belt. The Hit and Miss engine was a major boom in improving efficiency and alleviating worker exhaustion.
Many years ago, when growing up on the farm when I must have been 5 or 6 years old, I remember my Dad had a Hit and Miss engine on a water pump jack that pumped water from a sand point well for the hogs and cattle. I distinctly remember the sound. I do not recall or may have never looked or even thought about to see if the engine was a Galloway engine. I do not recall my Dad mentioning the make of the Hit and Miss after he replaced with electric motor to run the water pump when he had electric
wires run to the pump location. Unfortunately, I think the engine may have gone to the iron pile!
